What do you do?

I deal with editorial graphics – paper and digital layouts, illustrated vector covers* - but also digital illustrations, maps for fantasy novels or RPG, mockups, author branding, promotional graphics.

*The covers I design are purely illustrated (in the future I will also work with 3D), but they will not feature photomanipulations. As much as I am able to do them, it is not a style that is to my taste and I prefer to leave it to those who have been doing it with passion for years, such as Giulia Calligola – Lunar Morrigan Art.

What literary genres do you work with?

My favourite genre is fantasy in all its subcategories.

Are commissions open? How can I book?

Commissions are currently open. You can contact me via the form at the bottom of the page or with an email to grafica@thatshortwriter.it. I will get back to you with as soon as possible.

Who are your services addressed to?

I am first and foremost an author and work for other authors who decide to jump into the magical and terrifying world of self publishing. I am also available to collaborate with bookish boxes and publishing houses, if requested.

What is the design process like?

The process will be divided into: draft design (e.g. a schematic layout of the cover or page layout, or the sketch of the mannequins in the case of character illustrations), clean black and white draft to understand any tonal values and depth, low-resolution colour draft, final low-resolution file for final review. I will share each step with you in order to understand if the direction taken is the right one. For further details, please read the art. 2 of the T&C.

Do I have to pay a deposit to book?

You do not need to pay a deposit to book your slot, but I will ask you for a deposit upon acceptance of the quote, before we start work. This is to cover any expenses for stock/font/texture etc. and for my work itself.

I would like to work with you. What do you need?

It depends on what you need! To make the job easier for both you and I, I will ask you to fill out a questionnaire aimed at better understanding your artistic and technical needs, including a complete, print-ready manuscript (i.e. free of typos and corrections to be made) for possible layout. I will also accept reference images if you consider it useful – but under no circumstances will I reproduce a copyrighted design you do not own.

How many changes can I request?

Between the draft and the clean black-and-white draft, substantial changes are permitted, up to a maximum of three, beyond which the quote will have to be revised or whether it makes sense to continue the collaboration. A substantial change is understood to be a change of the main object/model, background, etc. Once the clean black and white draft has been accepted, only minor changes are permitted (to the colouring, if feasible, typography, positioning of certain elements if the general layout is not disrupted, etc.); any substantial changes requested after this stage must be budgeted and paid for separately.

How do the payments work?

Every commission is always budgeted and agreed upon prior to its commencement. Any request or substantial change to the graphic work not explicitly agreed upon in the estimate must be the subject of a new estimate. I reserve the right to ask for an advance payment of up to 50% of the total fee before the beginning of the commission. The balance of the agreed fees must be paid within 14 days of receipt of the invoice and only then will you receive the high-resolution files.

Once you have received the final files, you will no longer be able to ask for a refund. Should you decide to cancel the commission after you have paid the deposit, I undertake to refund the total deposit, less any stock already purchased. There is no refund if I decide to cancel the order after work has started.

Payments by bank transfer or Paypal are accepted, for which regular invoices will be issued.

How long do you take to complete a commission?

It depends on the complexity of the request. The timing will be agreed with you during the quotation phase.

Are you available for a book series?

Of course I am! But you have to have a clear idea on what you want, as it is difficult to go back once the series has started.

What will I receive at the end of the collaboration?

The graphic works that are the object of our collaboration will be delivered to you in the requested formats and sizes, previously agreed upon in the quotation phase. I will never share the editable files, but I will be able to give you specific elements on request (e.g. the title of the book on a transparent background), but only for the exclusive use of the object of the collaboration (e.g. it is not possible to use individual graphic elements on other graphic works that are not the object of the collaboration, neither by your hand nor by the hand of third-party designers).

Who will hold the rights to the graphic works?

What you will receive together with the graphic works is a grant of the rights to use the work indefinitely, unless otherwise agreed, but not of the ownership of the work itself, which remains mine. You may use the graphic works that you have commissioned from me for the use agreed upon in the quotation, for as long as you deem necessary, but you may not modify them (by yourself or a third-party Designer), reproduce them for other purposes not agreed upon, or transfer them to a third party (e.g. a Publisher) without my express consent. I advise you to read Art. 3 of the T&C carefully.

May I share the works I commission from you?

Of course you can! Likewise, I reserve the right to publish them on my social networks and website for promotional purposes, subject to agreement on timing (e.g. cover reveal).

Can I modify the works I commission from you, by myself or with someone else's help?

Absolutely not. You may not in any way modify them (either by yourself or by a third-party Designer), reproduce them for other, non-agreed-upon purposes or give them to third parties (e.g. a Publisher) without my explicit consent. I advise you to read carefully the Art. 3 of the T&C.

May I use the works I commission from you together with a publishing house?

The transfer of rights of use to third parties requires a written agreement with the undersigned. If you wish to transfer the right to use graphic works with an extended licence to a third party (e.g. a publisher), this must be agreed and paid for separately.

If you have any other question, please do not esitate to contact me!
